Colvend is a picturesque village with a primary school, community hall and village shop., the latter being just a ten minute walk from the property along a country lane. Locally there is a nearby 18-hole golf course and lovely coastal walking paths. The nearest town is Dalbeattie, which provides various services including secondary schooling along with shops and cafés, while the county town of Dumfries, which is about 13 miles away, is home to an excellent range of facilities including a hospital and a university campus.

Transport links to the area are very good. There is a main line railway station in Dumfries, and there are regular flights to the rest of the UK, Ireland and Europe from Prestwick Airport, which is about an hour's drive. Edinburgh and Glasgow can both be reached in around two hours.
