Location

The picturesque village of Rock, beside the Camel estuary, is busy for much of the year with yachts, dinghies, water skiing, kayaks, paddle boards, and each summer hosts a schedule of sailing competitions. The beach is long and wide at low tide, excellent for swimming at high tide, with easy walks to Daymer Bay, to Polzeath and beyond, on the South West Coast path.
The natural beauty of the estuary is enhanced by the abundance of wildlife, with frequent sightings of dolphins in the summer. Stepper Point stands sentinel where the estuary opens out to the Atlantic, sheltering the approach into the harbour at Padstow and to the moorings at Rock. The Rock to Padstow ferry operates all year round, with a trip taking only a few minutes.

The beautiful championship links course at St Enodoc Golf Club attracts golfers from far and wide and sea fishing enthusiasts can join day long excursions from the pontoon.
Rock is also a haven for food enthusiasts. Paul Ainsworth, at The Mariners, sets a very high standard, with other restaurants also serving top quality sea food and local produce. The village has a primary school, two churches and many family-owned businesses including a boat builder and chandlery, petrol station, supermarket, fish and chip takeaway, bakery, butcher, fish shop, art gallery and the luxurious St Enodoc Hotel. There is plenty to do and much to enjoy.

A traditional stone cottage, this has a great deal of appeal as a cosy hideaway, nicely private and overlooking a pretty garden. Enter the glazed stable door into a quarry tiled kitchen, with a laundry cupboard immediately inside the door and the fitted units and appliances around a corner to the right. A fitted breakfast bar is in front of the east facing window that opens onto the courtyard. There is a modern electric oven, hob and extractor. A little internal window into the living room is left in place from the days before the kitchen extension was added. Also in this part of the cottage is the bathroom with a bath and freestanding shower on a slate tiled floor.

The living room window with a deep sill, looks west and onto the lane. There is an open fireplace in a slate hearth, which, combined with the low beamed ceiling gives a cosiness to the room. There is an alcove with recessed shelves and cupboard doors, as well as two other spacious cupboards.
A door opens to the stairs, naturally lit by a casement window. The slightly larger of the two double bedrooms has a window to the rear garden and a view of the fields beyond. There is a wash basin in a tiled alcove and inbuilt storage. The second bedroom has views to the lane and the garden and has an inbuilt cupboard. the ceiling slopes in both rooms, but there is good head height. There are electric radiators upstairs and down.

A secure door opens to an alley way and a door onto Porthilly Lane, shared with the neighbouring cottage.
2, Porthilly Cottages is very sheltered with mature shrubs screening the perimeter of the garden. The slate paved courtyard is particularly private and perfect for enjoying al fresco lunches. Steps up to the rest of the garden lead to a slate bench beside the rear gate, with a lovely view across Porthilly Farm and along the estuary, with the Iron Bridge, Little Petherick Creek and the Padstow monument on the far side. It's a tranquil and sunny spot.

Directions

From the A39 at Wadebridge at Ball roundabout take the exit for Rock, Polzeath, Port Isaac and at the next small roundabout go right onto the B3314. Follow to the first left to Rock and continue along the Rock Road, until the left turn down hill to Porthilly. Porthilly Cottages are on the left. Drive past and turn left just before the speed sign into a narrow lane and left again into a wide, gravelled parking area. Steps up to a small wooden gate lead to no 2.
