Architect Gunnar Daan is known for designing a variety of objects, including houses, commercial buildings, sculptures, and furniture. TWA was founded in 1972 in Oosternijkerk by Gunnar Daan. Initially under his own name, the firm later became GDA Architects. In 2005, Bauke Tuinstra and Doeke van Wieren succeeded him, and the firm was renamed TWA Architects – the acronym 'TWA' also means 'two' in Frisian. Since 2004, they have been working from the former flour mill 'De Eendracht' in Burdaard on their projects.
