Location

Beaufort West is situated in the Central Karoo. It has the oldest municipality in South Africa.
It is the hometown of the famous heart surgeon, Chris Barnard. The town has a museum which exhibits his life story as well as some of the equipment used during his colourful lifetime.
The Karoo National Park main gate is a mere 5 km from town. This is a very interesting conservation area with indigenous flora and fauna and magnificent mountain vistas.
There are a couple of scenic mountain passes, hiking trails, game farms and even olive farms in the district.
Most of the national commercial banks operate in town, various schools (including a modern private school), two agricultural co-operatives, various grocery stores and clothing shops etc.
