Mark Cottage is one of four former coastguard cottages (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John) situated in a stunning beach front location between Abbotsbury and West Bexington and accessed off a single track, no through road.

This cluster of dwellings have Chesil Beach on the southern boundary and open farmland to the North, East and West.

The property is about 1¼ miles from the Abbotsbury beach car park with its popular cafe and Tropical Gardens.

The immensely pretty village of Abbotsbury which has changed little in appearance in centuries is about 2 miles away and has an excellent range of facilities including shops, tea rooms, the Ilchester Arms and Swan Inn public houses, art gallery, the famous Swannery, Tythe Barn and an activity farm for children.

The Manor Hotel and The Clubhouse restaurant at West Bexington are within walking distance just one mile along the Coastal Path to the West of the property.

More extensive facilities are available at the Georgian market town of Bridport with a number of national supermarket chains including a Waitrose.

Weymouth has an excellent marina nationally renowned for its sailing facilities.

The County town of Dorchester offers a further excellent range of facilities including a mainline railway station to London Waterloo, the journey taking about 2 ½ hours.

This beautiful stretch of the coastline, known as the Jurassic Coast, has World Heritage status and offers direct access to the world famous Chesil Beach and Coastal Path.

The stretch of beach close to the property is regularly voted to be one of the best fishing beaches in the country and it is not unusual to see dolphins.

Description

Understood to have been built in 1823, Mark Cottage is the second of this row of historic cottages, benefitting from stunning coastal views out to a quiet section of Chesil Beach, with vistas spanning as far as Portland across to Lyme Regis. Having been lovingly and extensively refurbished in recent years, the house has been brought to life with stylish interiors in keeping with the nature of the property and its surroundings. The recent addition of Velux windows in the kitchen have added to the already abundant natural light with breathtaking sea views from all main living rooms and bedrooms.

The ground floor comprises a dual aspect, open plan kitchen and dining room and a charming living room with electric wood burner. There is also a hall leading out to the quarterdeck, as well as a large family bathroom with vaulted ceiling. On the first floor there are two spacious double bedrooms with feature fireplaces and an en suite WC and basin to the principal bedroom.

The house renovations were carried out in 2013 with regular internal redecoration since and the outside was last redecorated in Autumn 2023 with extensive weatherboard replacement. The storage unit behind the cottage has been cleverly converted into a utility room with a WC and basin and a drop-down hatch leading to hidden snug above

Owning Mark Cottage includes the very special addition of Rocket House, the exclusive beach house set at the bottom of the communal gardens with bi-fold doors overlooking the Coastal Path and beach. Having been totally rebuilt, this secondary accommodation offers open plan kitchen and living space, an en suite shower room and a first floor mezzanine sleeping area with porthole window opening up sea and sky views. There is also a spacious storage room to the back of the building.

Outside
From the lane there is vehicular access over a shared drive with (leasehold) parking spaces adjacent to the properties. To the rear of the cottages is a shared pedestrian access to each of the cottages. At the front is the “The Quarterdeck” a lovely South facing terrace, including a private patio area overlooking the gardens and with spectacular sea views. Steps lead down to an area of lawn, sheltered by mature planting. Below this is a larger communal area of lawn with a stone boundary wall, beyond which is the coastal path and 17 miles of the Chesil Beach. The garden is sheltered to east and west by mature Tamarisk trees.

Directions

Abbotsbury lies on the B3157 between Weymouth and Bridport. From the centre of Abbotsbury proceed in a westerly direction towards Bridport, taking the left hand turning towards the Sub Tropical Gardens and Chesil Beach. Continue past the Tropical Gardens towards the sea and turn right at the mini roundabout just after the public car park. Continue along the lane with Chesil Beach and the sea on the left hand side. Drive for exactly 1 ¼ miles and Mark Cottage is on the right hand side.
