Description

Glenborrodale Castle
The impressive A-listed Castle is understood to date from 1902 and is a Scots Baronial mansion built of red Dumfriesshire sandstone. The Castle sits in a prominent position against the hillside close to the shores of Loch Sunart. On its south front, the entrance sits high above ground level and opens onto a wonderful, elevated balustrade terrace with superb, panoramic views of the islands of Risga, Carna and Oronsay and the Morvern Hills on the far side of the loch. A curved flight of stairs descends to garden terraces below, which has ample helicopter landing space and area for a helipad within the extensive grounds.
The castle is approached off the main road via a private driveway with stone pillars and wrought iron gates. Passing the Gate Lodge, the driveway meets a parking area to the front and side. A double arch and glazed entrance doors lead to a vestibule with marble flooring, original oak panelling, ornate cornicing and arched windows. An inner hall leads to an office, ladies' and gents' toilets and access through to the Bruce (1) and McDuff (2) bedroom suites. A further inner hall leads to the Burns (3) suite. There is also a hardwood, double glazed garden conservatory with a tiled floor and French doors leading out to the garden.
A feature staircase leads from the entrance hall with marble steps to the first floor. A focal point of the gallery hall is the original fireplace and canopy. The ceiling is barrel vaulted with wood panelling on the walls.
The four principal reception rooms are on this floor. The dining room has wooden panelling, an open fireplace with marble surround, an external door to the roof terrace and an access door to a serving kitchen. The sitting room has a bay window with seating, a turret with wonderful views and an open fireplace with a marble surround. The drawing room has wooden panelling and a centre fireplace with marble surround. There is an impressive bay window with seating with a feature lantern window above and a games room with two open display presses.
A circular staircase leads from the stair hall to give access to the second, third and fourth floors. Windows on all sides have wonderful views overlooking the gardens and loch beyond.
The second floor includes the Boswell (4), Macbeth (5), Mitchell (6) and Fleming (7) bedroom suites. The third floor includes the Byron (8), Lauder (9), Scott (10), Wallace (11) and Adam (12) bedroom suites. The fourth floor has the Mackinnon bedroom suite (13) which has a sitting area, dressing room and bathroom with a separate shower. The Baird bedroom suite (14) which could be used as a penthouse includes a sitting room with a kitchenette, double bedroom and bathroom.
The staircase takes a last turn to door to the upper turret stairs which open to a turret room on the 5th floor with windows on all four sides. Glazed doors open out on to the turret where panoramic views are enjoyed from the highest point of the Castle.
