This neoclassical townhouse with a rear office building at Tabakvest 13 was designed in 1872 by Heliodore Leclef for the merchant Ern. Walther. The house is characteristic of the buildings on the Frankrijklei in the 1860s and 1870s, where only buildings in neoclassical style were erected. Architect Héliodore Leclef was one of the most popular designers at the time. The house was adapted in the early 20th century by architect Frans Smet-Verhas, who designed the beautiful wooden loggia that still adorns the facade.
The neoclassical townhouse has three bays and three floors under a gable roof and, with its proportions and architectural style, belongs to the standard architecture built in the 19th-century neighborhoods of Antwerp. The facade is bordered by a wooden cornice and a stone plinth, and has a plastered and white-painted facade. Typical features include imitation joints on the ground floor, a string course and continuous sills, regularly placed rectangular window openings, with iron railings on the upper floors, accentuation of the central bay with a keystone on the upper floor, and a beautiful wooden loggia on the first floor. The door and upper window frames are preserved. The lower windows were lowered when the space was converted into a retail space.
The rear building, intended as office space, is a brick building with three unequal bays and two floors. The facade is unadorned, functional, with a low stone plinth and wooden cornice. The right door bay is in a projecting section, with two rectangular gate openings, and on the upper floor, rectangular window openings in flat frames, with preserved T-windows. Currently, there are two parking spaces on the ground floor.
