Bury Gate is situated in the conservation area, in the heart of Felsted village. The historic village provides a good range of local amenities, including a village shop and post office. Holy Cross Church, The Swan Inn public house, a tea room (next door) and Rumblebees (a bookshop/music cafe) also serve the village.

There is a more extensive range of recreational, leisure and educational facilities at Chelmsford, Great Dunmow and Braintree. There is nearby access to miles of footpaths and bridleways with the Flitch Way bordering the village, providing an important greenway and wildlife corridor between Braintree and Bishop's Stortford.      The area is well served by both state and private schools with a primary and pre-school at Felsted, together with the renowned Felsted School for boys and girls from age 4-18.
